CoMIC WA
Children of Mentally Ill Consumers
CoMIC was formed in 2007 by a group of concerned individuals who had something in common – they were living either as a parent or as an adult child where a mental illness was present in the family. They did not want other children or parents to struggle and go through what they had experienced.
CoMIC's aim is to educate, advocate and to become partners in developing policies and practices within the mental health services and community services sectors, services to make sure children’s special needs are met and are a priority. Since its beginnings in South Australia, CoMIC WA and the national CoMIC foundation have also been developed.
Family support
CoMIC WA aims to educate and raise awareness of the issue of family support. In their successful submission to Families and Housing, Children’s’ Services, Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), for community based funding, MIFWA proposed a family support program which would address the needs of all family members where mental illness is present. The service currently runs in the north metropolitan health region.
This innovative model is groundbreaking in its partnership with CoMIC WA, ie those with first hand experience provide advice to service workers and provide monthly community education
