Each year MIFWA helps raise awareness of Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses through Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW).  For the coming year MIFWA, together with the Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia (MIFA), will be working towards a nation-wide awareness campaign centred on the ‘physical health of people with mental illness’.

One of the highlights of SAW will be a Community Physical Health Expo.  The Lorikeet Centre will also be hosting an Open Day on Wednesday 16 May, at the Lorikeet Centre, 104 Cambridge Street, West Leederville.

There will be lots of free giveaways at the Physical Health Expo including:
• Door prizes
• Healthy snacks
• Show bags
• Recreation: Boccie, Frisbee Golf, Nerf Shooting, Flingers
• Information and services relating to physical & mental health

Who is invited?
Everyone is welcome.

This is a FREE community event and is open to people with mental illness, their carers, their families and friends, organisations in the health and mental health sector, the general public and community members.

Event: Grow Group for Carers
Topic: ‘Support group, using a group method, directed by a leader, following the Grow Group process’
Where: Ainsbury Centre, 30 Ainsbury Avenue, Clarkson
When: Thursdays – fortnightly
Time: 12.30 pm – 2.30 pm
Suitable for: Carers of a person with mental illness

Event: Walking for Wellness - Caring 4 Wheatbelt Carers 
Where: Bernard Park, Heaton Avenue, Northam (by the Big Horse on the foreshore)
When: Monthly, on Thursday’s 15 March 2012
Time: 10.00 am -11.30 am
Suitable for: Carers of a loved one with mental illness who lives in the Wheatbelt region, who would like to come along and enjoy a leisurely walk with other carers.

Event: Chittering Valley Retreat
When: Friday 18 May - Sunday 20 May 2012
Where: Chittering Valley Retreat, 221 Chittering Valley Road, Lower Chittering
Suitable for: Carers of a loved one with mental illness who lives in the Wheatbelt region, who is in need of short break away from their caring role.

More information:
The retreat covers all costs of accommodation, activities such as massage and meals freshly prepared on site by the owner who is a chef of many years experience.

Carers will have the opportunity to relax, share stories with other carers, learn new information, enjoy wonderful food and enjoy the company of wonderful people whilst listening to the birds, sitting by the fire, there will also be opportunities for bush walking and relaxation.
