Living Proof
A school-based educational program available throughout Queensland (formerly known as Mental Illness Education Australia - Queensland).
The 'Living Proof' mental illness education program for high schools and community groups provides an up-to-date, engaging and relevant learning and awareness experience for students and groups. The youth focused program highlights positive lifestyle choices, encourages self-awareness, early recognition and intervention for potential mental health problems and provides positive stories of recovery from mental illness by our accredited presenters.
We are members of Mental Illness Education Australia Inc, a coalition of organisations from around Australia and New Zealand committed to providing high quality programs for students young people to decrease stigma and increase knowledge of mental health issues and the services and supports available locally, regionally and nationally.
Who is it for?
The Living Proof Program targets high students and community groups of young people and those interested in the wellbeing of young people such as teachers and parent groups.
How does it work?
Small regionally based and trained teams of two or three people - including close friends, family members and people with a lived with mental illness and recovery - work with class size groups of young people for approximately one hour, explaining current understanding of mental illness; risk and protective factors; treatments and a broad spectrum of help including appropriate website and social media sites. Presenters talk about their own experiences of recovery and the insights they have gained. These positive stories (and the role models provided by those telling them), highlight recovery as an outcome of mental illness and promote early intervention as a key factor.
Students are encouraged to ask questions and have class notes and resources to take home. Teachers are provided with extensive resource kits to help with follow-up activities.
