Multicultural Awareness Program ("MAPS")

Multicultural Awareness and Psycho-Education Group ("MAPS")

Enhances the quality of life and well being of people who live with a mental illness

The MAPS group commenced 2008 as a community project to meet the needs of people arriving in Townsville from other cultural backgrounds. Our links with the Townsville Intercultural Centre and their Mental Health Project identified the need for people to have a meeting place to link with others and service providers.

The MAPS group meets weekly to share information from a variety of sources and for social connection. Multilingual facilitation and counselling advice, referral and support is offered by MIFNQ staff.

Programs available:

  • Psycho
  • Skill Development
  • Recreation
  • Community Access

Our target groups are:

  • Migrants and refugees to Australia
  • People with mental illness
  • Members of the wider Townsville community

The purpose of group meetings are to:

  • Improve social interaction and self confidence of our participants
  • Improve language and quality of living
  • Help our participants to locate services in the community
  • Help to learn problem skills for everyday difficulties
  • Learn how to identify and manage early stage depression, anxiety and stress

Bookings for Group Meetings are essential.  You can book your place by contacting Najat at MIFNQ on 4725 3664.
