Listening to people who hear voices

Participants are needed for a study into the experiences of people who hear voices. The researcher would like to interview anyone who currently hears voices. The aim of the study is to help bring about a better understanding of what it is like to hear voices and gives hearers the chance to tell the story of their experiences in their own way. Your experiences, ideas, and input are very valuable. This study has received approval from the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Ethics Committee.

A study of nurses’ use of empathy when working with psychiatric consumers in acute care mental health settings

The ability of a nurse to show empathy toward a consumer is an extremely important part of the nurse-consumer relationship. Empathy involves taking another person’s perspective and demonstrating compassion and concern.

This project will investigate how consumers experience empathy from nurses during an admission to hospital. We are particularly interested in consumers’ experiences during conflict situations with nurses: such as when there has been a disagreement with a nurse; where consumers have not wanted to take medication, or may have wanted to leave the ward; or when restraint or seclusion has been used.

The study involves an interview of approximately 45 minutes. Participants will be asked to think about and describe an experience that they have had during admission to an acute care ward. Participants will be paid $25 for travel to attend the interview at MIFSA offices ($25 received at the interview).
